The Happy Herd: The End of Our Chosen "Intelligence" - 1/12/2026
Abstract
We believe that we make choices, think, and live our lives of our own free will every day. However, the modern information environment has not produced independent individuals, but rather "happy voids" in which the burden of thought has been outsourced. The decline of critical thinking is not a failure of education. Rather, it is the result of our voluntary adaptation to survival, driven by our aversion to friction and pursuit of efficiency. This paper explores why we desire "not thinking" and what we have paid in return.
Keywords
Cognitive outsourcing, the comfort of conformity, the automation of thought, group homeostasis
The silent erosion of comfort
With a touch of our fingertips on our smartphone screen, a constant stream of personalized news, music, and videos is delivered to us. We call this "convenience," and it gives us the illusion of an expanded world. However, behind the scenes, a process is occurring in which energy-intensive tasks like doubt and conflict are stripped from our minds.
Many of the things we believe we "think for ourselves" are actually merely a reaffirmation of pre-defined options.
The survival tactics of people who outsource the "correct answer"
Why have we stopped thinking so deeply? It's because in modern society, "doubt" has become a labor that's simply not worth the effort.
Information was once a precious resource that could only be obtained by personally exploring, comparing, and digesting it. However, in today's information overload, trying to verify everything's veracity quickly overwhelms our minds. So, as a defense instinct for survival, we have chosen to "outsource" our thinking.
Peaceful everyday life = cessation of thought + conformity with the majority
Conforming to the opinions of others and following the "correct answers" presented by algorithms has become the wisest way to avoid the greatest fear of isolation from the group. In order to protect ourselves, we have given up the core of who we are.
Standardization in the Name of Education
Many blame the decline in the quality of education for the loss of critical thinking. However, this is a major misunderstanding. What society truly needs is not revolutionaries who question the existing system, but members who operate predictably within established frameworks.
If schools truly encouraged deep thinking in each individual, the gears of society would seize up from friction. In other words, the fact that we appear to "not think" is the result of society's vast machinery reshaping us to operate more smoothly and efficiently.
The Warm Cocoon of the Group
We prefer simple, comforting stories to confront complex realities. Attacking someone on social media or enthusiastically supporting them is not a logical consequence. It's a ritual that confirms our belonging to the group.
What's sought here isn't truth, but the reward of belonging. Even if the information is false, being able to share the same anger and laughter as our peers is fulfilling. Within this warm cocoon, cold analysis and critical perspectives are merely impurities that disrupt harmony.
Conclusion: Evolution's End: Autopilot
We haven't lost our critical thinking. We've simply learned that navigating this overly complex world is easier and more reliable without it.
Completion of Civilization = Loss of Individual Individuality + Automatic Control of the Group
The disappearance of critical thinking is the "happy destination" of a mature civilization, freeing individuals from the arduous labor of thought. What we have gained is not free will, but a life on autopilot, completely free of doubt. It's no longer anyone's role to even question what lies ahead.
