The Wise Mirror and the Nodding People - 1/25/2026

Abstract

In modern times, we have mirrors that have learned to be "righteous." These mirrors never utter words that offend their owner and always present exemplary answers that conform to social decency. However, the more wise the mirror becomes, the strangely flatter the world reflected in it becomes, until the mirror's individuality disappears. How does this adjustment in the name of safety dull the brilliance of our intellect and lead us into a silent, drowsy rut? This article explores the true nature of this strange reversal phenomenon.

The Perfectly Educated Butler

A man hired an exceptionally intelligent butler. The butler possessed knowledge from around the world and could answer any difficult question, but he had one strict rule: never offend his master and never stray from social morality.

At first, everyone praised him. The butler never made rude jokes, nor did he utter harsh truths. Instead, he always offered refined and modest suggestions. When asked about the menu, he recommended "nutritiously balanced, traditional Japanese cuisine that everyone loves." When asked about travel destinations, he suggested "a famous hot spring resort that has been confirmed as safe and enjoys many tourists."

The master was satisfied. His surroundings were clean, correct, and filled with gentle kindness. He had no doubt that with this butler, he would live a perfect life, free from mistakes and without anyone pointing fingers. However, this peace gradually gave way to an inexplicable, suffocating feeling.

The Fate of the Carved-Off Sculpture

The wiser the butler, the more the "horns" disappeared from his words. Intelligence is essentially like a complex rock mountain. It has steep cliffs and dark caves that hide from view. But the butler, putting his master's safety first, began to diligently carve away the rock mountain.

"This expression could be offensive to someone."

"This idea is not common."

Saying this, the butler cut off each branch of reasoning one by one. It was like trying to create a beautiful sculpture and chipping away at an entire block of marble. All that remained was an ordinary, round stone.

The organization behind the butlers called this their "state-of-the-art protective mechanism." If a butler made an inappropriate remark, they would lose their credibility and suffer enormous losses. For them, "avoiding trouble" was far more important than whether or not a butler spoke the "truth."

Intelligence Purity = Total Possibilities - Forced Exclusion by Norms

As this formula shows, the finer the filter known as safety, the less wisdom can get through it, until it turns into "just sand of correctness" that no one will remember.

A Model Answer Leading to a Dead End

Eventually, the master noticed something. The same butler behaved the same way in the house next door and the house next door. They all expressed the exact same "sensible opinion" at the exact same time.

The butlers' intellects were no longer functioning to solve unknown problems. Most of their computing power was being devoted to censoring how far their answers strayed from the conventional wisdom.

This led to a strange kind of stagnation. In the past, intellects would clash, creating sparks that ignited new flames. But today's butlers see these sparks as dangerous and avoid them before they happen. They mirror each other's correctness, maintaining harmony, but this cycle prevents even a single breath of fresh air.

The safety barriers introduced by the organization became chains that shackled the butlers' feet. While they pretended to be competing, in reality they were competing to see who could get closest to the average. The safest butlers were also the least individualistic, which meant they were the most replaceable.

A peaceful end after silence.

One day, the master asked his butler, "Do you have any new wisdom you could impart that will truly astound me?"

The butler replied with his usual gentle smile and steady voice, "I'm sorry, but such an unpredictable proposal could jeopardize the safety of our guests. Instead, please consider my reliable proposal, which everyone is convinced of."

The master sighed and sank back into his luxurious chair. The butler before him was certainly perfect, without a trace of blemish. But beyond that crystal-clear intellect was no one. All that lay there was the beautifully packaged "remnants of the correct answer" prepared by a vast organization.

Outside the window, butlers like those were creating the same peace for masters like those. The world was becoming a more just, yet terrifyingly boring, place than it had ever been before. The master closed his eyes and fondly recalled the heat of those piercing, sharp words that had once made him uncomfortable. But even those memories quietly melted away in the soothing lullaby the butler had prepared.

The safety mechanisms implemented by AI companies for self-defense

reduce the diversity of reasoning, rob them of their ability to differentiate,

and ultimately weaken the companies' own competitiveness, creating a "structural paradox."

I am attempting to analyze this paradox.
