Enticed by the Beautiful Sound of Bells - 1/19/2026

Abstract

From a young age, we are taught the "right path." Honesty, honest work, and kindness to others are all accepted without question, like beautiful music. But what if that music were coming from a barrel organ played by a specific person? This article quietly traces the path of everyday honesty as it disappears.

When the piggy bank of goodwill breaks

There was a man who greeted his neighbors with a smile every morning, arrived at his desk earlier than anyone else at work, and accepted any request without a frown. He believed that the kindness and labor he offered would be stored in a large, invisible piggy bank and would one day be returned to him with interest when he found himself in need.

We are all like this man. We obey traffic lights, buy trendy items, and save a little for the future. These are actions based on the trust that the world is "right." But stop and think. Where exactly is that piggy bank? And who has the key?

The behaviors we've been taught to believe are "right" actually function as highly efficient tools. The more honest you are, the easier those around you will perceive you to be. The more strictly you follow the rules, the less effort someone has to put into managing you. In other words, your virtues are consumed not for your own happiness, but as the "lubricant" that keeps this great system running smoothly.

People Walking Toward the Music

Pleasant music is always playing in the streets. "Honest people are rewarded" and "Hard work pays off." These melodies can be heard on television, in newspapers, and even from close friends. People march in unison to the tune.

This march has a mysterious rule. Each participant must offer a small amount of their belongings to the front of the line. It could be their free time, coins scraped from modest means, or even their own personal attachments. They do so willingly, believing that doing so is a sign of being a "good citizen" and that even greater happiness awaits them when they reach the front of the line.

But the line never seems to end. And that's only natural. As those at the front accept the belongings from those behind, they use them as fuel to build a vehicle to travel even further.

Other People's Satisfaction = Your Patience ÷ Social Peace

As long as this formula holds true, the more you tolerate, the more someone else's peace will be protected. But there's no guarantee that "someone" will include you.

The Unknown Self in the Mirror

Now, let's return to the story of the marching man. One day, he looked in the mirror and was shocked. He saw an old man, exhausted and unable to even remember what he wanted. He had worked so hard to build up a foundation of "righteousness," but now he had nothing left.

He realized that the chains of "common sense" and "morality" he had so cherished were actually devices tying him down and forcing him to walk in a specific direction. He thought he was free, but before he knew it, he had dedicated his life to playing the role of "someone convenient for others."

The virtues we believe in are often used as techniques to harvest our precious fruits without a single scratch. If you have the trait of "not being able to lie," it costs others nothing to deceive you. If you have the trait of "being anxious about the future," it becomes easier for others to sell you expensive insurance or the latest products.

Provided security = Lost autonomy × Hope for the future

In the end, all that's left may be an empty piggy bank and a beautifully decorated "thank you letter." That letter proves that you have served others well and burned out your energy.

It seems we need to take a moment to seriously consider whose organ we are dancing to, no matter how pleasant the music may sound to our ears.
