On the Transparent Currency Known as Gratitude
Consider the individual who is beloved by all, enveloped in constant words of thanks. Their apparent fulfillment seems a symbol of ultimate happiness. However, beneath those warm words lies a hidden collapse of balance and a mechanism of subtle exploitation. This essay examines how the sound of "thank you" siphons real value or constructs a false image, all through a quiet, observational lens.

Empty Vaults and Ceaseless Applause
In a certain town, there lived a very kind man. Whenever someone was in trouble, he would lend a hand immediately, helping carry heavy loads or repairing broken furniture. The townsfolk loved him, and every time he passed by, they offered him the words "thank you." The man always smiled, appearing satisfied simply by receiving those words. He was a symbol of happiness and the pride of the town. In another place, there was a woman who spoke calmly about how much she was appreciated by those around her. Those who listened to her were impressed by the warm relationships she had built and respected her as a special person. These are the very images of harmony we idealize—where everyone helps one another, and in return, beautiful bouquets of gratitude are presented. In this perfect circle, there should be no room for impurities.
The True Nature of the Warm Mist
However, a closer look at the man's life reveals a strange fact. He is always busy working, yet there is never enough food in his kitchen, nor savings to fix the leaks in his roof. Meanwhile, the neighbors he helped, immediately after saying "thank you," spent the time and effort they had saved on their own pleasures or savings. What is happening here is not an exchange of beautiful virtues. The words "thank you" are a magical incantation that transforms what should have been an actual payment into a mere mist in the air. By expressing gratitude, the people who thank the man release themselves from the burden they should have carried. It is the cheapest possible means of settlement—one that avoids paying a substantive reward. As the warm mist of gratitude deepens, the man's reality is chipped away, while the number of "profited" people around him increases.
Calculations Lurking Behind the Transaction
On the other hand, the woman who publicly declares she is "appreciated" hides a more sophisticated intent. By speaking of the praise she receives from others, she circulates the illusion that she is a person of high value. It is akin to hanging a sign saying "Filled with Gold Coins" on the outside of a vault, even if the inside is empty. People who hear her story believe her to be a "valuable person" and, hoping to benefit from her presumed grace, proactively offer her favors. She does not receive formless gratitude directly; rather, she uses the "reputation" of being appreciated as collateral to draw out future benefits. It is equivalent to selling an empty box as if it were a gold bar. The stories of gratitude she tells are not records of saving someone, but merely a calculated publicity stunt to drive up her own market value.
The Silence After the Festival
Eventually, the kind man became buried under a mountain of scrap paper known as "thank yous," which added not a single cent to his life, and he could no longer move. Amidst hunger and exhaustion, he realized that the mountain of gratitude he was said to have built was, in fact, nothing more than ash accumulated by shaving away his own life. After he was gone, the townsfolk said, "There was never a better man," and, offering words that cost them nothing, immediately began looking for a new "someone."
Meanwhile, the woman who continued to speak of being appreciated found one new collaborator after another, and even now, she lives a glamorous life somewhere, fueled by the expectations of others. Around her, the hollow applause never ends. In this world, those who receive heartfelt gratitude in abundance are destined to be quietly worn away, while those who flaunt the existence of gratitude grow fat by using the ignorance of others as a nursery. In the town square, words of thanks still overflow today. This is nothing other than an incredibly ominous sign that someone is being robbed of something, and someone else is faking something, once again.
